May 04, 2011  Can I mix regular aquarium gravel with a substrate made for plants such as eco complete? so far i have 1 java fern and 1 mico sword and ill soon be adding java moss as soon as it arives and eventually a few other plants. id like to give the plants a better substrate but i dont want to loose all the nitrifying bacteria in my gravel.

Feb 24, 2006  Feb 20, 2006. #1. I would like to set-up my planted tank with both a soil substrate and sand. When I see this being done, it looks like cardboard is placed between the two in the initial set-up then it is removed. It would seem that that would make for a real pain keeping them seperated. If not I would love to know how that works.

Jan 30, 2008  The second way is to try for a sediment layer under the main substrate, and that can be river silt, backyard silty subsoil, Diamond Black (Leonardite), and some even use manure. The main substrate can be pool filter sand or equivalent, SMS, Flourite, EC, etc. ADA Aquasoil is already nutrient loaded so having a sediment sublayer is overkill with it.

Aside from the roughness, there is a bacterial risk. If substrate fish such as Corydoras are intended, it is best to get rid of the EC and use just sand.
